Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay: Japan through the eyes of a torchbearer

Approximately 10,000 torchbearers will travel around all 47 prefectures during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay, which will begin on 25 March 2021 and last for a total of 121 days.

We spoke to torchbearers residing in the following eight areas: Fukushima, Tochigi, Kyoto, Okinawa, Kagawa, Shimane, Hokkaido and Shizuoka, about their feelings for the local community and their enthusiasm for the torch relay.

Behind the Scenes: The people who support the Olympic Torch Relay

Some 10,000 torchbearers will participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay as it traverses through all 47 prefectures in Japan.

Over the course of the 121-day schedule, which kicks-off on 25 March 2021, the relay will be supported by many other people working behind the scenes all across Japan, who will ensure the Olympic torch passes by safely.

Tokyo 2020 spoke to some of those involved and the important tasks they will undertake.

TOKYO SKYTREE® lights up in colours inspired by the 47 prefectures

Special illuminations featuring 47 different images - one for each prefecture - will be projected onto the Tokyo Sky Tree®. Between 25 March and 21 April, it will be displayed from sunset to 21:00. From 22 April to 22 July, it will be extended until 22:00. Each prefecture has selected its own image.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay concept is 'Hope Lights Our Way', and each prefecture’s name will be projected by laser mapping onto the Tembo Deck of the Tokyo Sky Tree® during the same period.

The route of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay is being projected on Google Earth Voyager to help everyone follow its journey through all 47 of Japan’s prefectures.
