Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay

The International Paralympic Committee’s underlying vision for the Paralympic Torch Relay is “The Paralympic flame is for everyone – the accumulation of everyone’s passion for the Paralympic Games generates the flame”.

Heritage flame lighting events are held in Stoke Mandeville in the UK – the birthplace of the Paralympics – and at several locations across the host country. The flame represents the passion everyone has to support the Paralympics. And this isn’t limited to the actual flame; a digital flame has also been approved for use on social media. The flames lit at the various locations are brought together in the Host City to form the Paralympic Torch, and the Torch Relay then takes place around the Host City.

The very first Paralympic Torch Relay was held in Seoul for the 1988 Paralympic Games. The total distance of the relay route was 105km, with some 282 runners carrying the Paralympic Torch.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay

In line with the concept “Share Your Light”, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay aims to raise excitement and create a festive-like atmosphere for the Paralympics, and maintain the momentum and excitement of the recently completed Olympics during the period of transition to the Paralympic Games. The Torch Relay will take place from 13 August – four days after the closing of the Olympic Games, to 25 August – the day of the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Opportunities for New Partnerships – runners in groups of three

Towards a fully-inclusive society that celebrates our different values and potential – regardless of age, gender, nationality, or impairment. It is anticipated that the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will give everyone an opportunity to reflect on a new partnership between humans, and between humans and society.

Groups of three runners will personify the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay. Three people meeting each other for the first time will come together to form teams of runners. It is hoped that the new encounters that occur through taking part in the Torch Relay will prompt people to contemplate diversity and come to realise the wide-ranging benefits of a fully-inclusive society.

It is expected that a decision on the specific criteria for selecting paralympic torchbearers will be announced in the autumn of 2019. Further information will be posted on this website at regular intervals.

Concept: Share Your Light

In line with the concept “Share Your Light”, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay will raise excitement and create a festive-like atmosphere for the Paralympics.

This expresses the sentiment that the light emitted from new individual encounters will be brought together to engender harmony and will be shone brightly on society. It also demonstrates Tokyo 2020’s determination to help achieve a fully-inclusive society by the gathering and meeting of the “light” – human beings – who provide hope and support to others through the Paralympic Torch Relay.
