The Torch Relay in Niigata will start in the city of Itoigawa, on its way to recovery from the great fire in 2016. The Torch Relay will then make its way to the city of Minamiuonuma where a celebration will take place in Yairo no mori park at the end of the first day. On the second day, the Torch Relay will leave from the city of Nagaoka, ending at the Iwafune Port Harbor Green space in the city of Murakami for a celebration.

The highlights of the Torch Relay in Niigata will include: the remains of Sado gold and silver mines, the largest in the country; the national treasure of kaengata-doki ,earthenware with a flame design, discovered in Tokamachi; Yahikoyama Mountain offering a panoramic view of Echigo Plain, the Sea of Japan and the island of Sado; Shinanogawa River and the city of Niigata, prospered as a port of call for kitamae-bune merchant ships; and the city of Murakami, known for the beautiful sun setting against the Sea of Japan.
