Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games “1 Year to Go!” Ceremony

The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will kick off exactly one year from today. We are inviting special guests from all over Japan and from abroad to a ceremony to commemorate this exciting moment together. We will look back at our preparation efforts that started approximately six years ago when Tokyo won the bid. We will deliver a message to all athletes worldwide, welcoming them to the Tokyo 2020 Games. We will have athletes take part and artists delivering a special performance. And the moment people have been waiting for – the design of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals will be revealed. Everyone will share the anticipation of the Games that will come to Tokyo in one year’s time.

'1 Year to Go!' Ceremony and Let’s 55 (Go Go) Special Event was a success.

Event Details

  • Opening Performance
    Former rhythmic gymnast Honami Tsuboi will perform to the sound of Tsugaru-jamisen (a guitar-like Japanese instrument) played by the world-renowned Yoshida Brothers. This totally new sport entertainment performance will also feature a projection mapping display created under the special cooperation of Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner, Panasonic Corporation.
  • Messages from the Host, Guests,
    and the IOC
    Representatives of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and the IOC will each deliver a message containing their thoughts about welcoming this one-year-to-go moment.
  • Invitation to the Tokyo 2020 Games
    An invitation letter to the Tokyo 2020 Games will be handed out from the IOC to the representatives of the NOCs invited to this ceremony. A message of welcome will be delivered to all athletes around the world.
  • Promotion of the Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay Torchbearer Programme
    The official ambassadors of the Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay will enter the ceremony site carrying a torch. They will express their excitement for the Tokyo 2020 Games and their emotions toward the Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay, for which torchbearers are being recruited right now.
  • Announcement of the Design of
    the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Medals
    As the athletes invited as special guests watch on, the medal design selected from the 421 design applications submitted to the Medal Design Competition will be revealed. The designer will also be introduced and will share the concept and the emotions that went into the design.
  • Special Live
    At the end of the ceremony will be a music performance by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. They will express everyone’s anticipation toward the Tokyo 2020 Games with their powerful performance. There will also be a special one-time-only collaboration.

    Tokyo Ska Paradise

    Arranging Jamaica’s “ska” music to a genre they call “Tokyo ska”, the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra tours Asia, Europe, the US and South America with a member of nine musicians. They celebrated their 30-year debut anniversary in April 2019.
