Important notice

On Tuesday 24 March 2020, the International Olympic Committee and The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced the postponement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

A new schedule for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay will be decided in accordance with the decision made on the specific dates of the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games.

The following information was compiled and released before the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Games was announced on 24 March 2020.

The Wakayama Prefecture Paralympic Flame Festival will feature a flame lighting ceremony and departure ceremony at the Tanabe Sports Park Gymnasium in Tanabe City, which is a hub for the promotion of Paralympic athletics. The Paralympic flame was lit at a fire festival that was held in Hirogawa Town on 19 October, 2019 as a symbol of reconstruction, and will be sent to Tokyo as the Fire of Inamura (meaning a 'burning stack of rice straw') as the Wakayama Prefecture Paralympic flame.

Highlights of the festival will include performances by local high school brass bands and talks by para-athletes, etc., to impart a sense of expectation for the flame lighting and departure ceremonies. After the end of the festival, participants will be able to experience Paralympic sports. It is hoped that by giving residents this opportunity that they will come to understand how difficult and easy parasports are, and build enthusiasm for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
