Important notice
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay will be held from 12 August 2021 until 24 August 2021, during the transition period from the Olympic Games to the Paralympic Games. It will aim to create a festive atmosphere in the run-up to the Paralympic Games while maintaining the momentum generated by the Olympic Games.
Going forward, Tokyo 2020 will coordinate with the authorities in each prefecture regarding the detailed schedule of Flame lighting festivals, departure ceremonies and other ceremonies along the route of the Relay. More information will be available in due course.
As of September 28, 2020
The Tokushima Paralympic Flame Festival will be held over a three-day period from Thursday 13 August to Saturday 15 August to coincide with the Awa Odori summer festival, which is part of the prefecture's globally recognised traditional culture.
Firstly, on Thursday 13 August and Friday 14 August, flame lighting will be carried out by people with impairments at 24 locations throughout the prefecture in events planned by local cities, towns and villages. On Saturday 15 August, the flames from the 24 cities, towns and villages will be brought together as one at ASTY Tokushima in Tokushima City, and after Paralympic flame visits to people throughout the prefecture as the Tokushima Prefecture flame, it will depart for the host city Tokyo, being sent off with Awa Odori, in which anyone can participate regardless of whether or not they have an impairment.
Flame visits
The flames of enthusiasm of the people supporting the Paralympics that are lit in each area of the prefecture will be brought together as one bright light at the flame gathering ceremony to become the Tokushima Prefecture Paralympic flame, which will then visit multiple places throughout the prefecture, such as facilities for interaction among people with impairments, so as to give the opportunity to experience the Paralympic flame to as many people as possible.
