Important notice

On Tuesday 24 March 2020, the International Olympic Committee and The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced the postponement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

A new schedule for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay will be decided in accordance with the decision made on the specific dates of the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games.

The following information was compiled and released before the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Games was announced on 24 March 2020.


For the Miyagi Prefecture Paralympic Flame Festival, 10 cities and towns throughout the prefecture will carry out flame lighting before a flame gathering ceremony and departure ceremony is held in Kotodai Park Open-air Concert Hall in the centre of Sendai City.

Flame lighting will be carried out at tourist locations, etc., throughout the prefecture, such as the Space Tower/Cosmo House, which is a symbol of Kakuda City, and the Historical Museum of Jomon Village OkuMatsushima, which is next to historic Satohama Shell Midden, where one can study about the Jomon period. At fire gathering of the Paralympic flame, the flame will be fuelled using biogas manufactured in various locations by children and by people with impairments, which will be brought together as the Miyagi Prefecture Paralympic flame, from where it will leave for the host city Tokyo.

Flame visits

The town of Zao features some of the best ski resorts in Miyagi Prefecture and is close to Mt. Okama, which is a symbol of Zao. The Paralympic flame, which will be lit at the Kattadake peak, will be on display at Togatta Onsen, which is set in the midst of an area of natural beauty.
