The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay will be held from 12 August 2021 until 24 August 2021, during the transition period from the Olympic Games to the Paralympic Games. It will aim to create a festive atmosphere in the run-up to the Paralympic Games while maintaining the momentum generated by the Olympic Games.

Going forward, Tokyo 2020 will coordinate with the authorities in each prefecture regarding the detailed schedule of Flame lighting festivals, departure ceremonies and other ceremonies along the route of the Relay. More information will be available in due course.

As of September 28, 2020

In Kagoshima Prefecture, a flame lighting ceremony will be carried out on the morning of Thursday 13 August at the Prefectural office in Kagoshima City, and on the afternoon of Monday 17 August a departure ceremony will be held in the same location.

In addition, flame visits will be carried out from the afternoon of Thursday 13 August until the morning of Monday 17 August.

In keeping with the history of Kagoshima Prefecture as the place where guns were first introduced into Japan, people involved in the preservation of Tanegashima matchlock muskets will light the flame using flint at the flame lighting ceremony.

The departure ceremony will see the Kagoshima representative raise the torch, declare departure, and send the Paralympic flame on its way to Tokyo, the host city.

The Paralympic flame will visit large-scale facilities, etc., for people with impairments throughout the prefecture, and in addition to being placed on display, 33 cities, towns and villages in the prefecture will exhibit the flame in their own unique way.
