Important notice

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay will be held from 12 August 2021 until 24 August 2021, during the transition period from the Olympic Games to the Paralympic Games. It will aim to create a festive atmosphere in the run-up to the Paralympic Games while maintaining the momentum generated by the Olympic Games.

Going forward, Tokyo 2020 will coordinate with the authorities in each prefecture regarding the detailed schedule of Flame lighting festivals, departure ceremonies and other ceremonies along the route of the Relay. More information will be available in due course.

As of September 28, 2020

For the Iwate Prefecture Paralympic Flame Festival, all 33 cities, towns and villages throughout the prefecture will carry out flame lighting, and flame gathering will be carried out in the outdoor parking lot of a shopping mall in Morioka City, which is renowned for its world record-holding Japanese drum parades, from where the Paralympic flame will also leave.

Flame lighting highlights will be the lighting of the flame using unique methods at various scenic locations throughout the prefecture, such as lighting the flame from the 3.11 Light of Hope permanent gas lamp monument in Rikuzentakata City, which suffered major damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and lighting the flame in Iwaizumi Town by concentrating the rays of the sun reflected in water from an underground lake in Ryusendo, one of the three largest limestone caves in Japan.
