General training (online) for volunteers
From the end of September, we will start sending an email to the eligible volunteers at the email address registered in Step 2 on the volunteer application form. When you receive the email, follow the instructions and reserve a date and time of your choice. You will then receive a log-in URL via email no later than two days prior to the reservation date.
The online general training is offered to volunteers living abroad as well as to those who had signed up for the general training that was to take place at the end of February but was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. Those who have already participated in a general training session (group training) will not be able to participate in this online general training.
The online general training will be conducted in Japanese or English only. We will inform the schedule of the days when the training will be offered in English via email. If you wish to take the training in English, please refer to the schedule.
We are setting certain dates to have the dialogue displayed in real time on the screen and to provide communication support. The schedule will be sent to you via email. Please refer to the schedule and reserve the date and time you prefer.
If you are more than 10 minutes late, you must reserve another date to take the training. (We do not accept a change of date/time on the day of your training.)
If you are planning to participate in the online training using your smartphone or tablet, you will need to download Microsoft Teams. If you are planning to use a PC, downloading Microsoft Teams is not mandatory, but the video function does not work on certain browsers, so we advise you to download the app in advance of the training if possible.
Please refer to the Field Cast general training (online) manual on how to participate in the training session.
Try to log in again. (Please make sure that you have a stable WiFi connection for Internet access when you take the training.)
Offer of “Role and Venue”
If the offer has been rejected, or if no reply has been made, then there is no guarantee that there will be another offer.
However, depending on how many offers are accepted, another Role and Venue notification may be delivered.
No. Once an offer is accepted or rejected, the decision cannot be retracted or changed. However, depending on how many offers are accepted, another Role and Venue notification may be delivered.
As described in the Volunteer Terms and Conditions, volunteers are responsible for finding and paying for their own accommodation.
For more information, please see the tourist accommodation pages of the Tokyo 2020 website.
You will receive a separate message from March to May 2021, containing the details of your shift upon your acceptance of the offer. As a rule, shifts will be eight hours long, including rests and waiting time, but excluding meal breaks.
Yes, you can accept, but you should attend the general training (e-learning) as soon as you can. Volunteers who were scheduled to attend general training (group training) on or after 22 February will be contacted separately, so please book a seat and attend. The English course is optional.
Yes, you can but we ask that you update your photo as soon as you can.
If you do not update your photo after receiving an email requesting that it be updated, then you will not be able to receive your accreditation card (ID card). Without this ID, you will not be able to enter competition venues and other secure areas.
Yes, you can accept. We plan to create several training schedules and we will communicate with you later. After you receive a message from us and if the schedule is still inconvenient for you, please contact us.
As a rule, we can only issue one accreditation card (ID card) for the Olympic (or Paralympic) Games period. Please discuss the problem with your employment agency, etc., and decide for yourself which ID you would like to acquire.
You will have to reject the offer; but there is no guarantee that another Role and Venue Notification will be made.
No, it is not possible to reject any single part (role, venue, FA) of an offer. Accordingly, it is not possible to reject the position of leader alone. Attempting to do so means rejecting the offer entirely.
Please select "Reject". We cannot make a promise, but depending on the overall approval status, you may be notified of your role and venue again. Please check your email and My Page regularly.
Details regarding roles will be provided during Role Training. Please understand that as roles are specialised according to the sport and venue, we can not provide further details.
There will be some cases, depending on the work that must be done, where offers will be sent for two or more venues. Moreover, there will be cases where volunteering will need to be done on days other than competition days. A message regarding shifts will be sent from March to May 2021.
As a rule, you should travel on public transport. Depending on the situation, we may permit some volunteers to arrive on a shuttle bus, private car, or a bicycle. At venues (to be decided) where volunteers may arrive in their own cars, there will be a designated procedure to follow, which will be explained later to the volunteers working at the venues.
Based on matching results, each item has been carefully checked and sent properly since 2 March.
There will be some cases, depending on the work that must be done, where offers will be sent for two or more venues. Moreover, there will be cases where volunteering will need to be done on days other than competition days. A message regarding shifts will be sent from March to May 2021.
When you accept the offer, you are accepted as a member of the Field Cast.
Activities were matched carefully to volunteers by comparing their preferred role, preferred location, and the roles, locations, etc., With over 80 thousand other volunteers, we therefore cannot make specific comments about the way that a role or venue was matched to any individual volunteer.
We will send out notifications as we proceed with the matching process, even to those who could not attend the general training (group training).
Offers are sent out gradually based on the results of the matching process. We will send two notifications to people who have applied to volunteer at both Games and will work at both Games, but in some cases only one notification will be delivered.
No. As the content of your initial application cannot be modified, we cannot send additional offers.
You should reject the offer for the Paralympic period. But please remember that there will be cases in which one offer is sent even though the applicant applied for both.
A, B, and C correspond to three options/sets of volunteer period on the Volunteer Application Form that applicants filled in when they applied. They do not indicate different roles, but different volunteer periods: ‘A’ corresponds to people who selected 10 days, ‘B’ to people who selected 11–29 days, and ‘C’ to people who selected 30 days or more.
Games volunteers and City volunteers
Games volunteers are recruited by the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, and will assist with Games operations at Games-related facilities such as Games venues and the Athletes’ Village. City volunteers are recruited by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and other municipal authorities hosting Games competition venues. They will provide assistance to Games spectators and tourists visiting Tokyo at airports, major train stations and popular tourism locations. For further information on City volunteers, please visit the website of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and other related municipal authorities hosting Games competition venues.
Period and time of volunteer activity
Apart from the competition days, it is possible that volunteers will be required to work on venue or competition preparations for a number of days prior to and/or after the competitions.
Volunteers can work at either the Olympic or Paralympic Games. Those wishing to work at both events will be required to work at least ten days at each event – a total of 20 or more days.
Including rest breaks and standby times, volunteers will be required to work for 8 hours per day.
Applying
Yes, you are free to apply to both. If you are selected to work as a volunteer at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, please ensure that your working days do not overlap.
All persons born on or before 1 April 2002 are free to apply to become a Games volunteer.
'Residency qualification to stay in Japan' is a residency qualification that allows holders to stay in Japan legally. Short-term stay visas are also included in these qualifications.
There are several volunteer duties that do not require language skills. We would very much like people with a strong desire to take part in volunteer activities to apply even if they have no confidence in their language abilities. Many overseas athletes, Games-related personnel and spectators will be visiting Japan for the Games, and we anticipate that many overseas nationals will also be working as volunteers. Accordingly, if you are able to communicate in a foreign language at least a basic conversational level, we believe that you will enjoy your volunteer experience even more.
Yes, we are hoping to recruit as many volunteers as possible, regardless of any impairment. Please note that if a person with an impairment who wishes to apply to become a volunteer also requires a helper or caregiver, that helper/caregiver must submit a separate application to become a volunteer. When completing the application form, please state this fact in the remarks column.
We will endeavour to match applicants with one of their preferred categories. Please note, however, that this may not always be possible.
A regular driving license will be required for some activities in the ‘transportation support’ category. Apart from that, no particular qualifications will be required.
We would very much like those with previous experience of volunteering at major sporting events to apply.
Orientation and training
Persons resident in Japan will be required to attend the orientation and training sessions in person at the applicant’s preferred venue selected during the registration process.
Yes, this will be possible.
A request can be made. However, the dates of the orientation and training sessions outside of Tokyo are limited, so in order to make sure that people living outside of Tokyo can attend, we would like to ask that Tokyo residents select a site in Tokyo.
We are currently considering requesting a number of applicants to perform volunteer duties at Test Events. This will not be included in the set number of days (10 days) that volunteers will be required to work during the Games. Details regarding volunteering activities at Test Events will be informed separately.
We plan to conduct these sessions in English and Japanese. If your preferred language is English, please state your request at the orientation registration desk. As to the general training, we will organise sessions in English so please reserve and attend the training session that will be conducted in English.
We will send an email to the address given in "Step 2" of the application form starting from the end of September 2019. When you receive the email, please follow the instructions for making a reservation on the date and time you prefer.
Not all applicants will participate in the orientation. We will match the applicants’ preferred field and location of activity with the positions available, and only those applicants we have been able to successfully match will be required to attend the orientation.
We will set up training sessions on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays as well as during the evening hours on weekdays to offer as much flexibility as possible for the participants.
Go to “My Page” and follow the instructions given in the Training Reservation Manual Tokyo 2020 Games Volunteer: Orientation and Training (PDF: 609KB)
Every participant who received a notification is required to attend at least one orientation session (about 90 – 120 minutes) in order to experience the ambience of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and to develop a stronger sense of teamwork.
Every participant who received a notification is required to attend at least one training session (about three hours) in order to gain the knowledge necessary to carry out their activities and to enjoy the experience. We will conduct a separate training session for overseas residents in June or July 2020.
In order to fully contribute to the Tokyo 2020 Games, we ask that you attend the entire session from start to finish.
There is no need to call in, but please beware that no one will be allowed to enter after ten minutes into the session. Please make sure you give yourself ample time to arrive before the start of the session. If you miss the session you reserved, please make another reservation on “My Page”.
Please contact the Tokyo 2020 Field Cast Operation Centre if you require day care service. Please understand that there may be days that we may not be able to provide day care service:

Matching
We will email the result and information to the email address you registered in Step 2 of the application form by the end of September 2019. Also, the status column on your "My Page" will reflect the status change.
We carefully compared and matched the 80,000 available positions with the preferences (volunteer role, location, etc.) of each applicant provided to us on the application form. We are not in a position to reveal the matching details.
Those applicants whose preferences could not be matched with any available position will be informed by email and on their "My Page" around the middle of September. Applicants who should participate in the joint training session will be informed by email and on their "My Page" at the end of September.
※Those who haven't completed their application registration process will be informed on their "My Page" around the end of September.
You can check your current status on the "My Status" column on "My Page".
1. If your status shows "Unmatced": There was an overwhelming response to the volunteer programme, and we unfortunately were not able to match your preferences with any available volunteer position.
2. If your status shows "Withdrawn": This means that you have chosen to withdraw.
3. If your status indicated is other than “Unmatched” or “Withdrawn”: You may have already received an invitation to the general training session. Please check by accessing “My Activity” on “My Page”.
For those of you who have not received the invitation to the general training session although your status in "My Status" from October 2019 onwards does not show "Unmatched" or "Withdrawn", please contact the Tokyo 2020 Field Cast Operation Office.

The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee will arrange insurance that will cover all volunteers during their working hours (hours during which they engaged in volunteer activities). Volunteers will not be required to pay the premium for this insurance. We are currently examining the optimum insurance policy to ensure the safety and peace of mind of all volunteers.
The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government have put together a collection of basic concepts which will guide the recruitment and training of volunteers for the Tokyo 2020 Games. Games Volunteers must be born on or before 1 April 2002. Anyone who has not reached the age of 18 on 31 March 2020 is not eligible. We plan to offer an opportunity for those who are 17 or younger to participate in other ways, such as serving as an escort kid. Details will be announced as soon as they become available.
We plan to release the information as soon as the overall policy is determined. The information will be provided on a number of occasions, including various training sessions as well as on the day of your volunteer activity.
Details have not yet been defined, but we may ask the Games volunteers to provide some help such as wiping the surfaces of desks, chairs, PCs and other commonly used items in the locations they are volunteering.
If you live abroad, a prerequisite of becoming a Games volunteer is that you must be able to enter Japan. You must therefore check the border enforcement measures of the Government of Japan to make sure that your country of residence is NOT among the list of countries/regions to which an entry ban is applied, and you must also confirm the required quarantine measures for entry to Japan. Please refer to the following URL for access to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website regarding entry to Japan.
Border enforcement measures to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19)
We are currently examining a variety of heat countermeasures for all Tokyo 2020 Games-related staff including volunteers. These measures include implementing a management system to ensure all personnel are provided with rest periods commensurate with the type of volunteer activity being performed and the venue at which they are based; the provision of uniforms designed with heat factors in mind; and ensuring volunteers are able to take on sufficient amounts of water and remain hydrated throughout their shift.
