About the Games
Recently, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) collaborated with the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) to organise events in the Tohoku region to celebrate One Year to Go until the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
On Sunday 7 July, a total of 3,328 runners (number released by the JOC) participated in the “Olympic Day Run” in Kitakata City, Fukushima. A Tokyo 2020 booth was set up at the event site for the approximately 400 children who took part and featured the Tokyo 2020 mascots, Miraitowa and Someity and a photo booth while both the Olympic Flag and Paralympic Flag were also on display.
They delighted kids affectionately asked the mascots, “Come back again next year!” and “Please wait here till I go get my friends!”
Ten Olympians also joined Miraitowa and Someity to celebrate the One Year to Go mark and helped get the crowd excited for the Tokyo 2020 Games.
On Friday 2 August, a Tokyo 2020 booth was set up in the gymnasium where the “Olympic Day Festival” was held for 100 elementary school students and their parents or guardians living in Shiogama City, Miyagi.
Six Olympians took part in the event with Miraitowa and Someity. The children who saw the Tokyo 2020 Games mascots said; “It was so nice that the mascots were chosen by elementary school students and we couldn’t wait till the Tokyo 2020 Games next year”.
They gathered around the mascots and took photos with Someity.
Tokyo 2020 will continue to organise various events across Japan to share in the excitement and anticipation for the Games.
