Statement by Yoshiro Mori, President of The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games:

"I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, and all the staff at the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee for their outstanding efforts in delivering the first Winter Games ever hosted in the Russian Federation.

"I was particularly struck by the warmth with which the members of the Organising Committee, the volunteers and the Russian people welcomed athletes and visitors from all over world to Sochi and their efforts to communicate the Olympic values.

"I know that President Putin has special feelings for the Olympic Games, and we share his joy. I was deeply moved as I watched the fantastic Opening Ceremony and marvelled at the tremendous efforts of all involved. The Opening Ceremony was a truly spectacular event. The fascinating narrative of Russian history and displays of traditional culture were exquisitely presented. I was in awe from the moment the ceremony started to the last. I was also keenly aware that the venue was packed with visitors from all over the world, yet the Olympics had brought us all together in a spirit of unity and friendship. I realised once again the power of sport and the unlimited potential of human beings.

"This celebration of sport has reinforced our enthusiasm and made us even more aware of the responsibility that Tokyo faces in ensuring that we too deliver an outstanding Games that puts smiles on the faces of athletes and young people around world.

"Over a 17-day period, the world will witness incredible performances by the world's finest athletes, all taking place in a dynamic atmosphere amid a further demonstration of the spirit and values of Olympism. The Tokyo 2020 team is now looking forward to learning a great deal from the Sochi Games. The invaluable experience and knowledge we gain will help us to put our plans in place to organise a superb Games in 2020 that will once again showcase the power of sport."
