Applicants of Volunteer Programmes to be invited to vote on names for Tokyo 2020 staff and city volunteer teams

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) today has opened voting to determine the names of the Tokyo 2020 staff and city volunteer teams. The applicants of these two programmes will be able to cast their ballot from today until 20 January 2019, with the chosen names announced at the end of January 2019.

All applicants of the two volunteer programmes will have one vote each. Those who applied for the Tokyo 2020 Games volunteer programme are invited to vote through the “My Page” feature on the Tokyo 2020 website. City volunteers can cast their vote via the relevant municipal government.

A total of 149 pairs of names were originally submitted by advertising agencies. The final four sets were selected following meetings of the Tokyo 2020 volunteer name selection committee whose members include athletes, past volunteers and experts, and by means of a trademark vetting process in Japan.

Applications for the Tokyo 2020 Games volunteers programme will be open until 17:00 JST on 21 December. An extension has been granted to applicants with a visual impairment, allowing them to apply until 17:00 JST on 18 January.

Tokyo 2020 Games volunteers will provide support in areas such as spectator services, competition operations and media operations, and they will be assigned to various locations including competition venues, the Athletes Village, and other Games-related facilities.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is recruiting its City volunteers separately, as are for municipalities hosting events outside of the Japanese capital. The City volunteers will welcome and support visitors to their hometowns during the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
