Sydney 2000 Women's 400m Final

The women's 400m final was one of the most highly-anticipated events of the Olympic Games Sydney 2000 with Australia's Cathy Freeman favourite to win gold.

Freeman had been the face of the Sydney 2000 Games and lit the Olympic cauldron at the Open Ceremony. As cameras flashed around the Olympic Stadium and with a roaring home crowd of more than 112,000, the stage was set. Freeman, who was the reigning double world champion, in a full green and white bodysuit, was just behind Jamaica’s Lorraine Graham and Great Britain’s Katharine Merry going into the final bend.

What happened next would forever be etched in the Olympic history books.
