It was one of the few finals where Michael Phelps competed and didn't win gold. Athens 2004 200m freestyle featured a stratospheric trio: Dutch reigning Olympic champion Pieter van den Hoogenband, Australian triple Olympic champion from Sydney 2000 Ian Thorpe and American legend in the making Michael Phelps.
