Tokyo 2020 Bid Ambassador Yuki Ota Elected to FIE Athletes Commission

Tokyo, 13 August 2013 - Tokyo 2020's Bid Team is shining even brighter today with the announcement that one of its Ambassadors, Yuki Ota, has been appointed as a member of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Athletes Commission. Ota, who was elected with the most votes (313) together with five others selected from among 19 candidates, will serve on the Commission for four years.

Ota is a pioneering figure in the world of Japanese fencing and sport overall. In addition to being a silver medallist in both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games, he has played an indispensable role in promoting Tokyo 2020's strong athletes-first vision of Games organisation and implementation. Also, when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission members visited Tokyo in March, Ota guided them around Tokyo Big Sight, the proposed Fencing venue in 2020, where he explained the venue plan in detail.
Ota said: "It is a tremendous honour to become a member of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Athletes Commission. Fencing is my life, so I am thrilled to serve as one of the Commission's members. Today is a huge milestone in my career. Going forward, I look forward to collaborating closely with my international colleagues for the betterment of the sport. I am confident that the popularity of Fencing will continue to grow in Japan. Should Tokyo 2020 receive the honour of hosting the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, I would be so proud to welcome all of my international Fencing friends and colleagues to Japan."

Tokyo 2020 CEO Masato Mizuno said: "Today Japan is celebrating Ota's appointment as a member of the FIE Athletes Commission. It is a huge day for Ota and the nation. Tokyo 2020 is very proud that one of its Bid Ambassadors has been given such an honourable role. As with his role at Tokyo 2020, I am sure he will be a strong and effective advocate for athletes in the FIE Athletes Commission, leading to further development and progress for the sport."
