Tokyo 2020 Welcomes Results of Monocle's Annual Quality of Life Survey

Tokyo 2020, Japan's bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, welcomed Monocle's annual Quality of Life survey which ranked Tokyo as the world's seventh most liveable city, up two positions since 2011. Tokyo's high rating in terms of transportation, cuisine, fashion and culture adds further momentum to Tokyo 2020's goal to host a spectacular celebration in the heart of one of the world's most dynamic cities, where Olympic Family members and visitors will have a world-class experience. Since the establishment of Monocle's Quality of Life survey in 2007, Tokyo has consistently ranked as one of the top ten most liveable cities.

MONOCLE highlights Tokyo's many attractive characteristics: "Its reputation as a neon-lit city of the future is, to some extent, justified, but what strikes outsiders most are the quiet backstreets and the almost small-town sense of civic responsibility. Tokyo has all the benefits of the big city: first-rate public transport, restaurants, shopping and culture, with few of the downsides. The streets are clean and the crime rate impressively low. In Haneda - now a full international as well as domestic airport - Tokyo also has one of the most efficient airports in the world.

Most remarkable is the way the city's residents go about their business. If you tried to replicate Tokyo in another country it wouldn't work since what really makes Tokyo function so well is its courteous, hard-working inhabitants." (MONOCLE July/August 2012, Issue 55")

The report validates a common perception of the capital: that Tokyo is one of the world's most exciting cities, boasting a mix of the hyper-modern and the traditional, rich cultural offerings, world-class cuisine and a distinctive fashion scene. Two other Japanese cities made the top 15, Kyoto (11th) and Fukuoka (12th), making Japan the only country to nab three spots, proving once again that it is a unique and spectacular country with a dynamic lifestyle.

Tokyo 2020 CEO Masato Mizuno was pleased with the results of the survey, saying: "I am thrilled that the decision makers at such a forward-thinking international magazine have recognised Tokyo's innovative culture and rich history. If Tokyo secures the honour of hosting the 2020 Games, I am confident that the Olympic and Paralympic Families and international visitors will likewise appreciate all that Tokyo has to offer."

Monocle is a global premium media brand that focuses on current affairs, business, culture and design. The magazine uses Quality of Life metrics that differ drastically from typical city surveys, which only take into account limited social and economic factors. Monocle's indicators include often-ignored key facets that contribute to the happiness and comfort of residents, such as a city's commitment to culture, amount of green space, shopping hours and quality of night life.
