The Caring Games

Connecting to Tomorrow with the Power of Sport

One of the important contributions to society the Tokyo 2020 Games aim to make is to support the recovery efforts and to encourage the people who devote themselves to rebuilding the local communities in the areas affected by natural disasters. The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) has been involved in many events and activities to help deliver energy to the people in such areas.

Many athletes have paid a visit to the Tohoku region after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The experience has given the athletes an opportunity to renew their perspective about the power of sport and the role of athletes in society. When Tokyo was bidding for the 2020 Games, the Japanese delegation appealed to the IOC during the final presentation that Japan would demonstrate the power of sport to the world and leave a positive legacy for future generations. After winning the bid, a number of natural disasters occurred in Japan. In times of difficulty we have seen at various occasions that sport has the power to connect people, to encourage people to have a dream, and to light up the children's lives with laughter and joy. As the athletes become a symbol of hope to the people, Tokyo 2020 will work closely with our partners to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Games and hope that our activities will deliver energy and motivation to those people who are rebuilding their lives.
